Elementary Watson

May 30, 2007 @ 8:46 pm (Permalink)

After avoiding the place for a couple of years, I finally subbed at the elementary school. Now that I can claim I subbed for all three level of schooling, what’s my conclusion?

I’ll stick with the order I started subbing with: high school, middle school, and elementary school. High school is in my blood.

On a side note, I never knew how fascinatingly loud Kindergarten and first graders could be, which befuddles me since their physical size is so … small. Sometimes things just defies logic and nature. Or maybe they seem louder because they are in the upper register? If that’s the case, then I shouldn’t be hearing them quite well since I don’t hear well in the higher octaves!

On a more serious note, it was interesting. We’ll see how it goes the next two days I’m working there.

End of Term IV

May 26, 2007 @ 12:40 pm (Permalink)

What a busy week! I subbed at the middle school all week. Along with that, I had to study for my final and write my last paper for the expository writing class. Today was the last class; I went and took the exam and turned in my paper. Now that class is over, FREEDOM! Now to enjoy my two weeks break from school. Hallelujah!

Aside from work and school, I’ve totally become a DS freak. I ordered two more games online, and those are: New Super Mario Bros. and Nintendogs: Dachshund and Friends. NO MORE. No more splurging. I think five new games is enough now. Although, I was really tempted to buy a GBA game, a Japanese import of Suikoden Card Stories, but I did not really want to spend 35,000 won at Emart….

Welp, I started on Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, and so far it’s cute and amusing. So along with that, I shall be gaming during my break. Tonight, I’m meeting up with my girlfriends. Sarah, Ahmi, and I will do our sleepover. ^_^ Woot woot! We shall have fun gaming and watching movies. What a lovely way to start my break!

Ubi the DS

May 19, 2007 @ 9:38 pm (Permalink)

I’ve decided to name my DS Lite, Ubi, short for “ubiquitous.” Yes, I’m a nerd. Don’t remind me. XD

After class, I met up with Sarah. We went to the Electronic Market. We were on a hunt for a clear plastic case for our DSes. I was also looking for a carrying case. We succeeded in our mission and more!

We found a clear case for 10,000 won ($10) and a hard-cover carrying case for 12,000 won ($12). I even found a copy of Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time for 28,000 won ($28). The stupid vendor lied to me though, saying that the game was new when it was used. Damn guy. At least the game works.

Now I can play Ubi without worrying about scratching the outside cover and getting fingerprints on it! Muhahaha!

Spring Band and String Concert 2007

May 18, 2007 @ 10:26 pm (Permalink)

Remember my post about making my debut as a conductor? Well, I would consider tonight as the real entrance of my conducting career. Few weeks ago, I decided to ask Mrs. Lee if I could conduct one of the songs for the concert. I had my heart set to conduct “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” a medley consisting of “Hello Beastie,” “Jack Sparrow,” “The Kraken,” “Davy Jones,” and “I’ve Got My Eye on You.”

At first she was hesitant about me conducting it due to it being a challenging piece with major tempo and time changes throughout the song. Even I was hesitant once I found out that other students from other classes were going to be included with Intermediate Band. But then we decided to go for it. Therefore, I would say that I rehearsed this song with the WHOLE group only twice? Luckily, though, I knew the song very well by the time I decided to conduct it. Hence the reason why I had my heart on this song.

Boy talk about nervous! It was so nerve-wracking! I actually acted vain about my appearance for this concert! I didn’t know what to wear, and I was pissed at the darn pimple on my nose! Normally, I don’t care what I look like, but I was fussing over what to wear! How… GIRLY of me. That just makes me cringe.

Anyway, tonight was the big gig. Not only was I conducting Intermediate Band’s last song, but I was also playing the tuba music on the keyboard for Beginning and Intermediate Band, so I was not an audience member for half of the concert. Despite my nerves being challenged, I pulled through. The group pulled through. Thank goodness, they knew this piece. Then again, it’s their favourite, so I bet they practised that more than the other two songs they had! The whole concert was lovely, though. Of course, the grand finale of Concert Band (Advanced Band) playing “Chronicles of Narnia” with the selections of “The Blitz, 1940,” “Evacuating London,” and “The Battle.” That was a great piece. Such a thrilling and emotional music.

After the whole thing was over, I was surprised to see so many people complimenting me. It was quite surprising to hear that none of my nervousness was visible. And it was even more surprising to hear that I conducted with such emotion. Er… I never would have assumed that about myself since I have no clue how I look conducting from audience’s point of view. But I’m glad it went well. I’m glad I didn’t have a panic attack that would have surely led me to fall off the stage. I’m equally pleased that I didn’t have to conduct with a baton. I envisioned the baton flying out of my hand and hitting someone… X_X;;

But it’s over… and this marks yet another milestone in my life. It’s strange how even when I was graduating from high school, my final spring concert is what marked the ending to that chapter. Same thing with this concert. It is time to move on to another job, another adventure… even if I am RATHER RELUCTANT of leaving my current position of being Mrs. Lee’s assistant. I don’t mind ending my substituting days, but being a helper to the most wonderful teacher in the world is not something I am willing to give up. I can’t believe it’s almost TEN years since I’ve been associated with the band room. It’s amazing how time flew. I just realised that today. I seriously do not want to leave the band room. How can I ever give up my second home? But all good things must come to an end.

Nintendo DS Lite

May 17, 2007 @ 6:42 pm (Permalink)

My friend AJ said I was “dangerous” for introducing her to shopping online at Amazon. In conjunction to that train of logic, I have to then say that Belinda is dangerous as well. Because of her influence, I finally am an owner of a handheld game console. Something I haven’t had after the old black and white Gameboy in the mid-90s. XD

Yes, I went to the PX and bought this lovely thing. I also purchased Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Justice for All, along with getting Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney at Amazon. My original plan was to purchase these two games and then borrow Sarah’s DS. I figure that I should just buy my own, as a wise investment in the long run.

So whee! I have a new toy to play with. Once I settle in with those two games, the next DS games I want to buy are Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time and New Super Mario Bros.

But anyway, thanks Belinda, for introducing me to Phoenix Wright, which has led me to be VERY materialistic. XD XD
